Cost formula

Use this simple structure:

Total job price = materials + consumables + gas + labor + equipment + subcontracted work + overhead + contingency + margin

Keep the worksheet assumptions with the quote so the customer and welder know what is included.

Quote assumptions to state clearly

  • Material grade and thickness are as provided or measured.
  • Existing coatings, galvanizing, oil, or contamination may require extra prep.
  • Confined space, elevated work, fire watch, or hot-work permits are not included unless listed.
  • Inspection, testing, procedure qualification, or code documentation is included only if stated.
  • Customer-provided material is not guaranteed unless inspected and accepted.
  • Changes to fit, finish, deadline, or access may require a change order.

Red flags to slow down

  • The job involves galvanized, lead-painted, stainless, coated, or unknown material without a fume-control plan.
  • The customer expects structural performance without drawings, specs, or inspection criteria.
  • Field welding requires hot-work controls that are not priced.
  • The estimate ignores prep time and only counts bead length.
  • The quote promises certification or code compliance without identifying the applicable standard.
