An E7018 rod can look perfectly normal after absorbing moisture. The problem may appear later as porosity, unstable handling, or hydrogen-assisted cracking in a susceptible joint. That is why low-hydrogen control is a documented material-handling process, not just a warm box beside the welder.
This checklist separates unopened storage, opened-package holding, field issue, exposure tracking, redrying, and disposal. Why E7018 moisture control matters
The low-hydrogen coating is manufactured and packaged to limit moisture. Once moisture enters that coating, welding can introduce more diffusible hydrogen into the deposited metal. Risk depends on the steel, restraint, thickness, preheat, heat input, hydrogen level, and other procedure variables.

1. Receive and inspect unopened packages
At receiving, record the manufacturer, trade name, AWS classification and suffix, diameter, heat or lot number, and package condition. Check that cans, vacuum packs, or other moisture-resistant packaging are sealed and undamaged.
Store unopened packages:
- Indoors in a dry, protected area
- Off the floor and away from exterior walls or condensation
- Within any temperature and shelf-life limits stated by the manufacturer
- By lot so material remains traceable
- Under first-in, first-out control unless the quality plan says otherwise
A dent alone does not prove a seal has failed, but a puncture, broken vacuum, water staining, corrosion, or uncertain history calls for quarantine. Do not silently place suspect packages into normal stock.
2. Confirm the controlling instructions before opening
Before a package is opened, identify four controls:
- The exact manufacturer’s data for that product and package
- The approved WPS and supporting job documents
- The governing code or contract edition
- The employer’s consumable-control procedure
Do not treat a temperature from one brand’s table as a universal E7018 rule. Even electrodes with the same AWS classification may carry different moisture-resistant suffixes, packaging, exposure limits, holding ranges, or redrying restrictions.

3. Transfer opened electrodes to approved holding
Mark the opening time and move electrodes promptly into the approved holding oven or issue container. Verify the oven is designed for electrode holding, has a readable temperature indicator, and is within its calibration or verification interval.
The goal is to maintain compliant electrodes after opening, not to redry questionable material. A holding oven and a redrying oven do different jobs. Do not use a household food oven: it lacks suitable controls, creates contamination concerns, and should not be used for industrial consumables.

4. Issue rods to a field quiver
A portable heated quiver is a transfer and work-area control, not indefinite storage. Before issue:
- Confirm the quiver is clean, dry, functional, and approved
- Preheat it if the procedure requires that step
- Issue only the quantity expected for the shift or task
- Record welder, lot, diameter, quantity, issue time, and return time
- Keep the lid closed except when removing electrodes
- Protect cables and the container from impact, rain, and standing water

5. Track atmospheric exposure
Start the exposure clock when the applicable procedure says exposure begins. That may be when a sealed package opens, when electrodes leave a holding oven, or another defined point. Record breaks and returns according to the employer’s system.
Never assume “E7018 gets four hours” is a universal answer. The allowed period may change with product designation, moisture-resistant classification, humidity, code, and project requirements. If the history is missing, quarantine the rods instead of inventing a time.
A simple log should include:

- Rust, bent cores, or physical damage
- Unknown exposure or mixed identity
- Exposure beyond the permitted limit
Only rods that meet the written return criteria go back to compliant holding. Color, touch, and arc sound cannot prove a low-hydrogen condition.
7. Redry only under an approved instruction
Redrying is a controlled recovery process, not a way to erase unknown handling. The Lincoln guide states that the correct final temperature depends on electrode type and condition, sets product-specific limits, and calls for discarding electrodes whose coatings become fragile or whose handling changes after excessive redrying.
If redrying is allowed:
- Identify the exact product and exposure condition.
- Use the manufacturer’s specified pre-dry, final temperature, time, loading, and cycle limit.
- Use an oven capable of achieving and documenting that cycle.
- Spread electrodes as instructed so each reaches the required temperature.
- Record the cycle and return compliant material to approved holding.
If instructions conflict, stop and obtain a disposition from the responsible welding or quality authority. Do not average two tables or choose the hotter number.
Keep cellulosic electrodes separate
E6010 and E6011 are not low-hydrogen electrodes and rely on different coating moisture characteristics. ESAB warns that storing cellulosic and low-hydrogen electrodes together can harm both types. Give them separate, labeled storage and follow their own product instructions.
This is also why general stick welding technique advice cannot replace consumable control. Technique begins only after the correct, serviceable electrode reaches the welder.
